A Home That Echoes a Journey For a well-traveled professional, retirement was not about slowing down, but about creating a home that truly reflected who he was. A passionate collector and admirer of wooden furniture, he envisioned a space that would strike the right balance between modern comforts and the traditional pieces he had cherished over the years.
After spending nearly four decades in Central India, his journey took him to Indonesia and then Southern India, before he decided to return “Back to Roots”. The design brief seemed simple at first glance, yet it was layered with fine details that demanded sensitivity and precision.
Drawing inspiration from the houses of South India, we chose to celebrate wood in its truest form. Instead of opting for contemporary gypsum ceilings, the home is adorned with wooden rafters that immediately lend warmth and character. The common spaces are tied together with a delicate molding detail that highlights patterned tiles, while the kitchen backsplash comes alive with handcrafted Ashtamudi tiles. Softness was introduced into the home through arched openings, creating a sense of flow and calmness. His deep love for art became another thread woven into the design. Several pieces of furniture were designed to integrate artworks, making each corner of the home a personal expression of his journey.
The walls, finished in lime plaster, wrap the spaces in an earthy charm, evoking the humble elegance of a traditional home. The result is a residence that feels deeply personal, rooted in tradition, yet attuned to the rhythms of modern living.
